Who we are...

Learn about

First United Methodist Church

We are a church - a community of love, truth, and grace - helping others, and each other, know, love, and follow Jesus.

We love Jesus and we love people.

We believe God has called us to love and serve the people of Brenham & Washington County in a deeply personal way, as well as loving and serving others across this country and around the world.

Values

In our life together as a church and as followers of Jesus Christ, we value 3 things above all - community, worship, and serving others.

Being community means we believe that in fellowship and through being together we grow closer to God and one another. It doesn't mean we always agree on everything, but it does mean we will seek to love each other even in our differences. Jesus prayer for his followers was that they would be one as he and God the Father are one. We seek to let God answer that prayer in us.

We also believe that the best and most life-changing way we can be together is in worship - to gather in the name of Jesus, the one who gave us new life and new hope. The Bible says, "where two or three are gathered in his name" Jesus is there. We gather for worship not because it makes God love us more, but because through worship we experience God's love more and more.

We take a slightly different approach to serving in our community and around the world. Instead of trying to put together a ministry team to help solve an issue of need, we strive to get connected with other organizations in our community that are alreay doing the work. We go and serve Jesus by serving others in places where we see God is already at work. So, we have an ongoing relationship with Faith Missions, a Brenham area ministry that provides things like meals for the hungry, a resale shop for rasing funds, and a mentors for students, just to name a few. We have a team volunteering on Mondays at the Faith Misson resale shop - Higgins Branch. Our church also helps serve once a month at Gather N Grace serving the free family meals offered to anyone an everyone. We partner with global ministries like Living Water International and Dignity Liberia as a way to extend God's love beyond Brenham.

Mission

The mission of our church is that of every United Methodist Church:

to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We do this by helping others, and each other, know, love and follow Jesus.

Our goal is to make disciples who live among others as witnesses both in faith and right living as a way to help others find their new life in Jesus Christ.

Vision

We seek to build a community where deep and authentic relationships thrive, faith in Christ is nurtured, and hope is shared.

Beliefs

THE CREEDS

The core of our belief is found in the core of the Christian faith as attested to for most of its existence - the faith found in the creeds of the church.

We believe in God the Father, the creator of heaven and earth.

We believe in His Son, Jesus Christ: born of the virgin Mary, suffered, died and burried, on the third day he rose again. He has ascended back to heaven with the Father. He will come again to make all things new and he will assess the lives of both the living and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the third person of the one, true, trinitarian God. We believe the Church was given life by the Spirit and thereby all churches are part of what God has created. We may differ on what we understand regarding God's desire for us as a church, but that is more God's issue than ours.

We believe that in Jesus Christ we are forgiven; that in him we have life eternal and one day we will join all believers in God's perfect Kingdom.

THE BIBLE

We believe the Bible, the Holy Scriptures of the Christian faith, known to many as the written Word of God, is the Holy Spirit inspired testimony of God's truth - the truth of God's creation, salvation, and restoration. It is the story of God's hope for the world and the redemptive story being completed in and through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

We believe that as we open oursevles up to the Word of God contained in the Scriptures, by the power of the Holy Spirit working in us and with us, we are transformed by the renewing of our mind and the strengthening of our spirits. We trust that as we wrestle with the Scripture and seek to understand the fullness of God's truth, God is at work moving us closer to him and closer to each other.

Who we are as a United Methodist Church

For those who are aware, the global governing body of the United Methodist Church instituted some changes to the doctrine and practices of the church, which impact the local church. Some of these changes are not clearly understood by some, especially outside of the United Methodist church. In some ways we have become a less exclusionary church in our language, and thereby a more inclusive chuch in our theological expanse. John Wesley once said, "If your heart is as my heart, give me your hand." and "In the essentials unity... in all things charity..." and so we hold fast to that wisdom and now allow for a broader range of perspectives among our people and our churches. Our History

  1.  Organized in 1844 in a place called Hickory Grove where the city of Brenham is today.
  2. The orginal church building served the congregation until 1879 when a new larger building was constructed.

  3. In 1950 Brenham Methodist Church continued to grow and decided to build a new facility at our current location on North Baylor St and Academy.
  4. Our Activity Center which houses our Celebration contemporary worship service was built in the mid 1980's.
  5. Throughout these almost 200 years the church has maintained a focus on living fully as faithful followers of Jesus and welcoming all those who seek to find the life he offers.
